POSTED 3 – FutureWorld

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS…

POSTED 3 (Future World) will be a curated international poster project presented in September this year in the Shandon area of Cork City, in a venue outside Ireland, and on a project website. It will be the third episode in the POSTED PROJECT series from artist collaboration SKART. Submission will be free, and open to all artists who’s work can be re-presented in A2 poster format. The website will include a curated gallery of submissions; documentation from each venue; and a public discussion forum.
For this project SKART have invited Mick O’Shea, director of Cork Artists Collective, transdisciplinary artist and chef, to co-curate with us and to propose a subtitle.

Nearly all modern thinking about the future is hobbled by our obsession with a pair of rigidly defined mythic narratives — the myth of progress on the one hand, and the myth of apocalypse on the other.”   John Michael Greer

Whatever its relation to Liberalism, A Modern Utopia would nevertheless appear firmly situated within the ideology of Progress;  H. G. Wells’s fundamental criticism of previous utopias is precisely that they are static:
“Those were all perfect and static States, a balance of happiness won forever against the forces of unrest and disorder that inhere in things. One beheld a healthy and simple generation enjoying the fruits of the earth in an atmosphere of virtue and happiness, to be followed by other virtuous, happy, and entirely similar generations until the gods grew weary.”

POSTED 2 – The images, the place, the images in the place

supported by the Arts Council, Travel & Mobility Award supported by The Arts Council

While we were away…

Two days after we left for Oland, artists Graeme Walker and Maggie Tran arrived to stay in our house for a few days. One of us had met one of them about 3 years ago. We have all spoken by phone recently, to arrange this exchange. We arrived back from Sweden on 10th July to a quiet house, and inside the door a note that invited us to look around – they would be back from a walk shortly… [read/see more] That’s our clothes they’re wearing..

POSTED 1 & 2- Arts Council funding offers

After returning from Sweden (POSTED 2) we received a letter from the Arts Council of Ireland offering funding for POSTED 1. We are currently negotiating a schedule to actually get that money. Any affected persons will be notified as soon as possible!

The next day (today) another letter arrived granting a Travel & Mobility Award to us for the POSTED 2 residency/project.

POSTED 1 – an interdisciplinary poster project – June 2007

POSTED 1 will be a curated international poster project of 12 selected artists, presented in June this year in 12 venues across the world simultaneously, and on a project website. Submission will be free, and open to all artists who’s work can be represented in A3 poster format. The website will be the hub of the project: it will include a curated gallery of submissions; documentation from each venue; and a public discussion forum.
For this project we have invited two established professionals also based in Cork to co-curate with us:

Rene Zechlin, (Curator of Exhibitions and Projects, Glucksman Gallery, Cork), Trevor Joyce, (Contemporary Poet, Founder and Chair of SoundEye International Poetry Festival)

This project aims to challenge the increasingly unquestioned commodification of images, writing, and public blank wall space through a temporary installation of posters that are not advertisements. The idea for this project came from a frustration with the lack of motivation among artists to engage with the public outside of the gallery/exhibition space, and how advertisers have appropriated public wall spaces.
In 1960 Paul Goodman (Compulsory Miseducation, Penguin, 1960),
U.S. literary and social critic, argued that
“… when the purpose of advertising was to give information… it was useful to be able to read; when the point of advertising is to create synthetic demand, it is better not to be able to read.”

Could the same be said of visual literacy? When the purpose of images is to stimulate, inspire, inform, challenge, etc. it is useful to recognise and pay attention to the images; when the point of images is purely as an advertising tool (whether for a product or the artist) would it be better to not notice or pay attention?
We want to show this project in social area of multi-disciplinary art venues, because we are interested in bringing art-forms together, and showing work outside the formal gallery space.

POSTED 1 will be presented in two formats – online and as a printed exhibition.
The website will be the hub of the entire project. We are in discussions with web designers to get quotes for design of the website, and plan to register it as http://www.skartpostedproject.ie . It will contain information identifying each image in the printed exhibition with the artist who’s work it depicts.
-a gallery of all submissions.
-a forum to facilitate open discussion on the selections and the selection process,
-a gallery documenting each stage of the POSTED project in each host venue, with images taken by the hosts.
– links to participating and selected artists, artists groups, support organisations, gallery spaces.
– links to relevant artists’ networks and resources around the world
